Photo Challenge

I’m not much of a photographer. In fact, my only camera is not even a camera. It’s a phone. An iPhone. And because I’m not much of a photographer, I have never previously participated in WordPress’ weekly Photo Challenge. However, I saw that this week’s challenge was to “show the effect of time and the elements.”

I was walking my dog around Golden Gate Park today and I snapped this picture:

AF5DDE2F-088A-4B17-A19D-9BA1F2AF3171I pass by this building almost every day and I was curious about it, so I did some research. I found out that it was, at one time, a station for what was known as the Powell Street Railway Company. But there is no railway or even any train or cable car tracks anywhere near this structure. At least not anymore.

The Powell Street Railway Company operated a steam train that used to run all the way to the Pacific shore at the Cliff House from Powell Street in the heart of San Francisco. The train, and San Francisco’s historic cable cars, were originally built by the Ferries & Cliff House Railway Company, which started construction in 1887 after winning several franchises for cable car operation and for the aforementioned steam train.

In doing my research I came across this old photograph from 1955 showing the train entering Golden Gate Park.

Anyway, I decided to post this to the WordPress photo challenge this week, thinking my picture might be an example of something showing “the effect of time and the elements.”

It’s a great picture and very appropriate for this week’s challenge. I hope you will enter again. Most of my photos are taken with an iPhone too – the best travel camera 🙂

I know and love that building. Has been years since I’ve visited San Francisco but I remember this building well.

I love it that you posted a historical photo to go along with a current one—nice job! The background info is a wonderful hook to both images. I hope that this is a start for you to entering more photo challenges.

Don’t sweat the mobile phone photos. The iPhone is the Box Brownie of the 21st Century. It’s all I use anymore.

That is awesome. I’m in love with train stations, and I knew that was one the moment I saw your picture. Thanks for finding the old one! 😀 Lovely answer to the prompt!
